GSMA Names BARCELONA First Mobile World Capital!
As the Mobile World Capital, Barcelona will be the home of the mobile industry’s must-attend event, the GSMA Mobile World Congress, and will also develop a range of other programmes and activities that will span the entire year benefiting not only the citizens of Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain, but also the worldwide mobile industry. The press release is now available on the Mobile World Capital website.
We commend all of the finalist cities – Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris – for their excellent proposals and the huge amount of energy and creativity that was put into them. While all of the cities who competed for this title presented extremely innovative and compelling bids, in the end, Barcelona truly demonstrated that it deserves the title of the Mobile World Capital, with its combination of outstanding exhibition and conference facilities, its transportation and hospitality infrastructure, its commitment to expanding the reach of mobility throughout Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain, and the strong support of the public and private sectors. This is truly an exciting time for Barcelona and for the mobile industry as a whole.
Of course, the cornerstone of the Mobile World Capital is the Mobile World Congress. Starting in 2013, the Mobile World Congress will be held at the new, cutting-edge venue, Fira de Barcelona Gran Via. The dates for the 2013 Mobile World Congress are 25-28 February 2013. Mobile World Congress 2012 will remain at Fira de Barcelona Montjuic and will be held 27 February – 1 March 2012.
Beyond the Mobile World Congress, the Mobile World Capital also features two additional elements: the Mobile World Centre and the Mobile World Festival. The Mobile World Centre will be comprised of permanent and temporary exhibitions which will meld culture and technological innovation, facilities for the development and incubation of mobile solutions, and retail and hospitality venues. The Mobile World Festival, which is targeted to the general public, will incorporate a range of activities including sporting events, music and art festivals, film awards, applications and technology fairs and more.
We are very excited that Barcelona will be the Mobile World Capital for the next seven years, and we look forward to seeing you in the Mobile World Capital.
GSMA Embedded Mobile House Showcases the Connected Mobile Future
14 February 2011, Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain
Today at the Mobile World Congress 2011, the GSMA, along with AT&T, Ericsson, IBM, KT, Qualcomm and Vodafone, opened the doors to the Embedded Mobile House (EMH). Situated in the Courtyard in the heart of the Fira de Barcelona, the EMH showcases how embedded mobile technologies are already improving people’s lives, by demonstrating cutting-edge devices and services across different industry sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics, healthcare and utilities.
“Mobile technology is central to our lives today. Already we see huge growth in the number of embedded mobile devices and services, which have the potential to fundamentally change the way we live,” said Michael O’Hara, chief marketing officer, GSMA. “We expect to see more than 15 billion ‘connected’ devices globally by 2020, reaching into almost every facet of daily life. It promises to revolutionise everything from patient care and road transport, to how we control our homes and access information on the move.”
In the consumer electronics market, the EMH will include examples of embedded mobile technology that is transforming how people access and manage digital content inside and outside the home. It will also highlight how embedded mobile enables consumers to pay for goods and services with a simple ‘tap’ of their NFC* enabled handset, monitor and control their homes, and check on the well-being of their children or dependents. Recent research by Berg Insight found that shipments of consumer electronic devices with embedded mobile technology doubled to 22 million in 2010, with 271 million expected by 2015.
For healthcare, where McKinsey predicts embedded mobile will save $175-$200 billion annually by using remote monitoring to manage chronic diseases, the EMH will illustrate the transformational impact embedded mobile will have for patients. Mobile health will allow many more patients to lead independent lives through services that monitor a patient’s condition, for example, or the daily well-being of the elderly, and track when medications should be administered.
The transport sector has already been revolutionised by mobile devices such as satellite navigation, and is likely to see additional growth, according to IMS Research, which reported the number of new vehicles fitted with mTelematics will increase from 9 percent in 2009 to 46 percent in 2017 worldwide. Demonstrations in the EMH will show how embedded mobile can improve supply chain visibility through real-time freight monitoring and goods tracking. For consumers, the EMH will also feature services that provide ‘pay as you drive’ insurance and road pricing, and allow drivers to cut fuel usage and avoid accidents.
In the utilities sector, the house will present how embedded mobile technology, such as smart meters, energy management systems and remote sensoring technology, will improve utilities management and ultimately help in the race to create a green economy. In this market alone, Pike Research has predicted a total global spend of $200 billion from 2008 through 2015 on embedded mobile technology.
The EMH is part of the GSMA’s Embedded Mobile initiative, a programme to accelerate the global adoption of mobile connectivity in a wide range of devices in vertical markets such as consumer electronics, health, automotive and utilities.
The EMH is located at Suite CY21 in the Courtyard at the Fira de Barcelona. Press are invited to attend an exclusive tour of the house at 9.30am CET on Monday, February 14 (to RSVP please use the contact details below).

GSMA Announces Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris as Finalists Competing to Become the Mobile World Capital
The GSMA today announced that Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris have been selected as the short list of cities vying to become the “Mobile World Capital™”. These four cities will now move to the next stage of the selection process which will culminate in the winning city being named the Mobile World Capital for the five-year period from 2013 to 2017. Launched in November 2010, the concept of the Mobile World Capital includes not only the industry-leading annual Mobile World Congress event, but also a range of academic and business development opportunities, cultural festivals and programmes, and the creation of a centre for the industry.
“We congratulate Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris as they move forward in the last phase of the evaluation process to become the Mobile World Capital,” said John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd. “The quality of the proposals from the candidate cities to date has been outstanding, making our decision that much more difficult. The four finalists announced today each have a clear, multi-faceted vision for how they will make their city the Mobile World Capital, and we look forward to seeing these visions unfold as we move through the process.”
The GSMA’s concept of the Mobile World Capital includes:
The Mobile World Centre, which will be located in the heart of the city and will be the flagship element of the Mobile World Capital. The Mobile World Centre will include technology exhibits, museum features, a retail area, a mobile café, office space and more.
The Mobile World Festival, a range of festivities that will be targeted to the general public and will take place separate from the Mobile World Congress. Dispersed around the Mobile World Capital city, the Mobile World Festival will incorporate mobile-driven festivities including concerts, music and movie festivals, application competitions and awards, and dialogues and debates, among others.
The Mobile World Congress, which is widely considered the industry’s “must-attend” event and is expected to draw more than 50,000 visitors at the 2011 Mobile World Congress next month. The four-day conference and exhibition attracts executives from the world’s largest and most influential companies across the mobile industry and adjacent sectors, as well as government delegations.
“Barcelona is very honoured to have been selected among the four remaining cities to bid for the Mobile World Capital 2013-2017,” said Jordi Hereu, Mayor of Barcelona. “We believe that our city is the perfect location to develop a permanent platform for the innovative mobile industry and for the new concept of a mobile festival and legacy. We look forward to the next steps of the bid process and to the challenge of making our project a reality”.
“Milano is honoured and proud of having been selected among the finalists for Mobile World Capital 2013-2017,” said Letizia Moratti, Mayor of Milan. “Both long-standing residents and newcomers in this truly multi-ethnic and global city stand ready to contribute with their enthusiasm to make the Mobile World Capital not only a must-attend event, but a continuous five-year long flow of learning and networking opportunities, inspiration and innovation – a common dream which we all share with the worldwide international mobile community.”
“We are delighted at the decision of the GSMA to make Munich one of the four finalists in the bid for the Mobile World Capital,” said Martin Zeil, Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and Deputy Minister-President of Bavaria. “By placing it on the short list for the final round, the GSMA is confirming Munich’s international reputation as a high-tech location. This is both an honour and an incentive for the final. Politics, industry and science offer the GSMA an ideal home for Mobile World Capital.”
“Paris is very proud to be considered as a host for the new Mobile World Capital by the GSMA,” commented M. Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris. “With the help of our lively ICT and mobile community, we are committed to expanding the magic of our city to the fantastic future of the mobile world.”
The GSMA began its search for the Mobile World Capital by first evaluating more than 30 cities, narrowing the list to six candidates in August 2010, and has now arrived at Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris as the finalists to move forward in the bid process. The GSMA expects to complete the evaluation process and to announce the Mobile World Capital in mid-2011. For more information on the Mobile World Capital, please visit www.mobileworldcapital.com.
